Four Seasons of Gardening

A greenhouse offers four seasons of gardening pleasure. Here are some ideas for using a greenhouse during each growing season.
  • Spring - Start seeds in trays inside the greenhouse. As seedlings emerge, transplant into larger pots and keep them in the greenhouse until all danger of frost is past. Sow Onions, Parsnips, Sprouts, Cabbage, Broad Beans, Peas & Aubergines. Also Tomatoes, Courgette, Celery, Sweetcorn, Runner Beans, Leeks & Peppers.
  • Summer - Start autumn flowers, perennials and other plants inside the greenhouse.
  • Autumn - Begin winter plants inside the greenhouse such as amaryllis bulbs. Use the greenhouse to force Christmas cactus to bloom. Place house plants that won't fit on sunny windowsills inside the house in the greenhouse.
  • Winter - Use the greenhouse to grow some cold-hardy vegetables such as lettuce. Store house plants in the greenhouse and protect tender herbs and annuals you want to save, such a geraniums, by growing them in the greenhouse throughout the winter months. Remove shading & clean glass, frame & staging with disinfectant. Repair cracks or holes, ensure gutters not blocked with leaves.
